Salsa Night Review

June 28, 2008 – 4:03 pm

A belated review of our last fundraiser…the Salsa Night!

It’s a Saturday night; lots of eager and excited people are descending onto Ashington village hall with dancing shoes on and stomachs rumbling, it can only mean one thing; that’s right it’s the next Capetown08 fundraiser.

This time Capetown08 have gone Latin American and are throwing a Salsa night for both beginners and the experienced. Not wanting to waste any time Paul Weaver, who was leading the night, got straight into teaching everyone the basic steps to salsa and everyone seamed to be enjoying themselves until he asked them to grab a partner!

Practise

After the first lesson everyone was very much ready for the splendid display of food, which had been very carefully cooked and baked ready for this evening.

Food

After dinner it was time for lesson two and things were starting to hot up. Several more advanced steps were being taught and a few spins were starting to make an appearance.

Teaching

Before the third lesson was a short talk by one Mere Van Nes about the reason for the trip, then it was back to the dance floor for some final perfection of the steps and spins that had been taught.

To end the evening a free dance floor was available with many people taking advantage of this and showing off the moves they had learnt or perhaps stumbling around trying to remember whether is was left or right first.

Paul

However, it was a great night where everyone had a thoroughly good time. £990 was raised, which was a phenomenal amount and will be a huge help.

A big thank you to all those who provided food, helped to clear up/pack away and sell tickets, Simon for the sound once again and of course to Paul and the lovely ladies from Bath, who if it wasn’t for them, we woul hold the event. But most importantly of all a big thank you to all who came along and supported us and we hope you had a wonderful time.

60’s Night!

May 29, 2008 – 8:06 pm

Have any of you ever thought back to your childhood and quoted that well known phrase ‘those were the good old days.’ ?

Well if your childhood days were during the 60’s then you will absolutely love our next fundraiser as it is a 60’s night WAHOO!! and if your childhood days weren’t during the 60’s then come found out what it was like to be in the 60’s cause we think it was lots of fun.

There will be lots of great music that came from the classic era of the 60’s. We would like to see loads of people there and it would be great to see most in a 60’s style costume, there will be a competition for the best dressed being judged by a special selected panel. If this doesn’t appeal to you don’t fret you would still be in the chance for winning something on our Raffle so come prepared. There will be a finger buffet provided within the cost of the night and drinks will be on sale. (feel free to bring your own drink.)

It’s happening on the Saturday 28th June 2008 at 7:30 at Ashington Community Centre at a cost of £10.
We’ll look forward to seeing you all there.

Team Weekend Away Review

April 15, 2008 – 8:58 am

The Cape Town 08 Team had a weekend away on the weekend just gone. It was a great weekend for us all. A great opportunity to meet, have fun, find out more about the trip and each other. It was also great for the young people to be tested by the leaders, it just showed how well we can work together as a team!

Everyone arrive at Keyfox Farm, Petworth, at 7 o’clock on Saturday not really sure what an earth they had in front of them for the weekend. The team then sat down and introduced the ‘essential’ kit list item for the weekend, their Teddy Bears.

We all then had dinner and Grae spoke to us all about some important information for Cape Town. After Grae’s talk we went off for a night walk led my Nigel. The walk was extremely wet and slippery, and with it being pitch black we were all forever walking in the deep puddles. Most people on the team also were terrified my a random caravan in the woods. When we returned to the barn some of the guys set-up a bonfire for all of us to sit round and chat round with some yummy Aero hot chocolate and toasted Marshmallows.

After the fire began to die down we all went inside and got into our sleeping bags and snuggled down to watch the film ‘Oceans 13′. A majority of the team drifted in and out of sleep during the film. The film then finished around 1.30am and we arranged the room so we could all go to sleep, boys one side, girls the other. We then got to bed around 2am.

The alarms clocks then went off at 7am that morning, Grae and Nige went off to the kitchen and made and English Breakfast for us to enjoy. Around 8.30-9ish we all set off for our first challenge of the day. Our first challenge was Nigel’s. We all were blindfolded and had to follow a trial. The team had to stay in a single line with a hand on the person in front. The leaders led the young people to believe their were trees in places there weren’t so they were all ducking randomly. This really tested the team communication and trust in each other.

We then went on to Abbi’s challenge, we had to get the whole team through a web only using each hole once.

The team then quickly did went onto Grae’s Challenge. In this challenge the young people some tubing with holes in it, and the team had to fill it up as high as they could with water without the water trickling out.

Then the heavens opened and we dashed back to the barn to dry and warm up.

We then played a couple of games inside and had lunch. After lunch we all got back into our outside clothes and went out our last challenge of the weekend which was Emma’s. We had to make some frames out of wood and rope which would allow us to cross the river. We split up into 2 teams with Nigel assisting both teams.

capetown-00189-web.JPG

Whilst the frames were being built we a faller, Ben tried to jump across, but belly flopped on the bank and in the river. Grae tumbled over on the grass after a tug of war with Alex, where Alex just let go!

Once all the frames were constructed everyone on the team had to test them out, leaders and youth. Some got wetter than others, it all depended on how much the rope bowed.

Once we’d all had a go we packed all the equipment away and went back to the barn. After that we had a quick tidy up and left. Speaking on behalf of all the young people I can say it was a great weekend. A huge thank you to Grae, Abbi, Nigel and Emma for all their hard work! Also a big thank you to John and Sue Redell for allowing us to use the farm for the weekend!

Quiz Night Review

February 25, 2008 – 7:04 pm

On the 23rd of February at around 7:30 people from all over with thinking caps on and wallets at the ready, descended upon Washington Village hall for Capetown 08’s latest fundraiser the Quiz Night.

The HallAround 115 people came which was more than we had planned for and it was quite a squeeze to fit everyone in around the tables. It was also difficult trying to fill the hungry stomachs of all those guests but we managed to some how and with bellies full it was time to start the main part of the evening, the quiz itself.

Having been tuning their brains during there meal with guessing the pictures of the capetown team (with the slight twist of them being babies photos) and trying to remember the films, quotes such as “I’ll be back” came from, it was time for the main rounds.

The Hall 2First to remind everyone of the main aim of the fundraising, a round on South Africa commenced soon to be followed with a celebrity round and then an about the members of the capetown team round where a very important fact about each team member was revealed including that Ben Burt’s favourite word was “Syllabub”.

Each team also had a joker in which would double the score of that round and with the three big round of music clips, film clips and sports questions the jokers went flying.

RaffelDuring the evening raffle tickets had been selling like crazy with very few left at the end and it was now time to reveal those many winners of some truly fantastic prises many of which had been donated by some very generous people so a thank you to all who donated prises and also those who brought raffle tickets.

With the last round “What the” being several distorted pictures of random think it was time to find out which team would be crowned the winner. In the end there was little contest with “The Girls” taking first place by 14 points and followed by Adversary Reaction with 100. However it was the fight for third place that proved the most interesting. “Seven Brits and a Yank”, “Geneii”, “More Madness” and “The Worthing Lot” were all in with a chance but in the end it was “The Magnificent Seven” that scraped ahead by just one point.

So I know you all want to know if the Quiz Night was worth all the effort and I’m pleased to say that with over £1000 raised it was a massive success!

So a final thank you to all those who help by donating raffle prizes, cooking cakes and the other food needed, help set up and pack down (particularly Simon for lending his sound equipment), all those who made rounds and of course to all of you who came and participated, it was all much appreciated. A lot was learnt by the capetown team and I hope you all learnt a lot too. :)

Barn Dance Review

February 2, 2008 – 5:35 pm

Hello!

I’ve been asked to give a quick report of how the Barn Dance which was on the 26th Jan went! The dance was at Ashington Community Centre!

The Hall

I would say as a whole, that the whole night was a huge success!

We had about 110 people come altogether which is some way off our target of 200 people but we all believe it was the right number of people as with many more it would’ve been far too cramped! Everyone ate some humongous portions of some tasty chili or lemon chicken. We would like to thank Dorrie for all her hard-work with the catering. Also many thanks to all those who cooked a set of portions for us! Towards the end of the meal we had a raffle. Congratulations to all the winners! A big thank you to Richard Hatt for organising and running a very successful raffle!

The Band

A huge thank you to the band for the night! They were absolutely fantastic!

Altogether we raised over £700! So thank you for all your support and for getting behind the trip!

If you have any comments about the trip make a comment below!

Thanks and God Bless,

Alex

P.S. Hope to see you at the Quiz Night!

New Site…

January 31, 2008 – 10:06 pm

Hey Everyone…

The observant amongst you will notice the site has changed a bit…the old site was great but I needed some help keeping it up to date and the old site required to much technical knowledge to do that. So I have now implemented a tool where by other members of the cape town 08 team can help me keep it up to date :)

We hope you find all the information you need on this and enjoy looking through the pictures of past events!

Graham :)
